Citizenship Tutor Volunteer

In partnership SSI and Community Hubs is passionate about supporting individuals and families from migrant and refugee background to feel welcomed and empowered to access services in the community. 

Community Hubs are located in schools where members of community access English classes, citizenship classes, vocational training, volunteering and meaningful activities. 

The role of Volunteer Citizenship Tutor will join an existing group who gather and support participants to build their understanding of the citizenship test, and its requirements. 

Tasks

Support set up of tutor hub space, and welcome participants 

Assist with preparing work sheets and activities 

Provide one on one support to individuals, or in small groups 

Support participate to access practice test on their phones via app. 

*Training will be provided prior to commencing*

All volunteers welcome to stay after tutoring class to social with Hub attendees. 

Skills Requirements

Friendly, helpful and approachable nature

No experience prior teaching experience required, however keen interest to engage, tutor individuals and small groups. 

Willingness to learn (and teach) Citizenship Booklet 'Our Common Bond'

Availability weekly on Thursday for school term 2 (from now to end of June 2025)

The Community Refugee Welcome Centre is a safe and inclusive space where refugees and people seeking asylum lead, design, and participate in art, creativity and education programs, while forming meaningful connections with Inner West locals.

Along the well-trodden bay run of Sydney’s Inner West, inside the beautiful Callan Park, the Centre’s practice is grounded in love and care.

It is the only Welcome Centre of its kind in Sydney NSW, a creative and wellbeing space with social justice and human rights as our foundation.

We are looking for volunteers to help with delivering Centre activities such as general event support, arts-based activities, cooking and pathways to employment, so you can share your skills and passion with others.

About the Volunteer Community Support Assistant

The Humanitarian Settlement Program (HSP) supports refugees from the moment they arrive at the airport. Upon arrival, SSI’s HSP team provides essential support and information to assist refugees to gain independence and build strong connections in their new communities. 

When and commitment

Minimum 4 hours per week for at least 3 months. (Weekdays)

What you will do

Volunteer Community Support Assistants build on the case management support offered to HSP clients by providing language support, guiding access to local services, support with life skills development, local community linkages and building social networks. Additional duties may include assisting staff with office administration.

  • Assist clients to access key services and attend scheduled appointments
  • Link clients with appropriate social and cultural groups and/or meaning activities
  • Assist with community area orientation and life skills support as needed 
  • Assist clients to learn how to use public transport and opal card
  • Assist staff and clients through office tasks as directed by SSI staff, example: welcoming clients to the office, prepare relevant documents and conduct calls for appointments.
  • Actively support SSI’s vision and values
  • Work in accordance with SSI policies and procedures
  • Follow all reasonable directions provided by HSP Team Leader or delegate

 

Essential

 

  • Excellent social skills with a friendly and welcoming nature
  • Excellent communication and intercultural skills
  • Proficient in Arabic, Dari and/or other Afghan language), Farsi, Swahili, Tibetan or Ukrainian
  • Available to volunteer for a minimum 4 hours a week
  • Good ability to use Microsoft word, photocopier and make phone calls
  • Flexibility in performing a range of tasks
  • Ability to use public transport and navigate around Western Sydney
  • Willingness to support elderly clients and/or clients with varied levels of abilities

Desirable

  • Previous experience working with people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds

All volunteers have the responsibility to:

  • Actively support SSI’s vision and values
  • Work in accordance with SSI policies and procedures
  • Follow all reasonable directions provided by HSP Team Leader or delegate

 

Reimbursement

 

Volunteers will have access to reimbursement for all pre approved expenses including reasonable travel expenses. Volunteers using their own vehicle will need to provide SSI with photocopies of their driver’s licence, comprehensive car insurance and current car registration.

 

Training

 

Volunteers will be provided with access to SSI’s flexible, extensive and innovative training program.

The Multicultural Support Club (MSC) strives to promote social inclusion by encouraging community connection through range of sports, as well as meaningful social activities. MSC welcomes community members from all ages, abilities and culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) backgrounds to become active and bring people together.

The volunteer role of Multicultural Sports Club Support Volunteer is diverse and not limited to one duty. Volunteers bring with them a ray of skills, strengths and experiences that will benefit participants, visitors of MSC as well as community.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Program support: assist with the facilitation and delivery of sports program to children, youth, and adults, ensuring all activities run smoothly and inclusively for participants from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Administrative assistance: help with administrative tasks such as registering participants, maintaining program records, managing communications, and preparing documents e.g., attendance forms.
  • Equipment set up and pack down: Prepare and organise sports equipment before each session and ensure all equipment are packed away after each activity or event.
  • Participant engagement: Support participants during activities, ensuring they are engaged, motivated, and following safety protocols. Provide encouragement and assistance as needed.
  • Safety and Supervision: Help ensure the safety of participants by monitoring activities and ensuring a safe environment for all.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Demonstrate cultural awareness and sensitivity when interacting with participants, staff and other volunteers from diverse backgrounds fostering an inclusive and respectful atmosphere.
  • Event support: Assist in the organisation and execution of MSC events, tournaments, and other community-based activities
  • Feedback collections: Assist in gathering feedback from participants to improve the sports programs and create a better experience for everyone involved.
  • Actively support SSI Group’s vision and values
