About the Role

SSI’s Homework Assistance Program is supported by our Community Development team, who deliver culturally and linguistically sensitive information sessions and workshops to groups of clients who are going through the settlement process. These sessions take into account the different literacy levels and cultural backgrounds of the participants and are delivered in partnership with local organisations focusing on various topics. The Homework Assistance Program volunteer will work one - on - one with students from primary age to year 12 assisting them with maths. You will   assess student's current math skills, discuss trouble areas, develop lesson plans that enable the student to better understand maths concepts and work through their homework and study for exams.

When and commitment

Tuesdays & Wednesdays from 6:30pm - 8:00pm during school term. 6 months commitment requested.

What you will do

  • Help to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for students
  • Provide individual and small group support
  • Provide instruction and support to students to improve their understanding of maths 
  • Provide feedback to students of their progress

Essential

  • Experience of working with children or young people aged 5 to 18

  • Ability to connect with school aged students

  • Teaching/tutoring experience

  • Knowledge of and experience in teaching maths  

Desirable

  • Previous experience working with people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds

  • Ability to communicate in a language other than English would be an advantage

Responsibility of volunteers

 

  • Actively support SSI’s vision and values

  • Follow all reasonable directions provided by the Program Manager, or delegate

 

Reimbursement

Volunteers will have access to reimbursement for all pre-approved expenses including reasonable travel expenses. Volunteers using their own vehicle will need to provide SSI with photocopies of their driver’s licence, comprehensive car insurance and current car registration.

Training

 Volunteers will be provided with access to SSI’s flexible, extensive and innovative training program.

About the Employment Pathways Support and Training Sessions

The Employment Pathways Support and Training Workshops are run by SSI's Volunteer Employment Support Team (VEST), a volunteer led and conducted initiative, who provide a range of activities and support to assist people with pathways to employment.

The volunteers who make up VEST have extensive experience in leadership, management, communication, and customer service and have volunteered in roles assisting people with job seeking skills and as well as using volunteering as a pathway to employment.   

Support and training sessions are offered in person and online and include topics such as:

  • CV Building Workshops
  • Job Searching Tips
  • Preparing for an Interview
  • Writing a Cover Letter

This is great opportunity to assist you to gain the skills and confidence to maximise your chances in the job searching process and get you started with career success.

The support you receive will be specific to your employment needs and interests and offered in one-on-one and small group sessions.

How to Reset a Lost Password or Recover Your Username 

  • Click the “Forgot your username or password?” link on MyVolunteerPage.com 
  • Select “I forgot my password” and enter your username OR 
  • Select “I forgot my username” and enter your email address 
  • Click the [Send Email] button 
  • Check your email inbox 
    • If you selected, I forgot my password, click on the link in the email and click the [Reset my Password] button.  Check your email inbox again for your account details (username and temporary password). 
    • If you selected, I forgot my username, retrieve your username from the email. Visit www.myvolunteerpage.com and login using the credentials sent to you 
  • You will be required to update your password after a password reset.

Multicultural Sports Club (MSC) - Brisbane

Volunteer MSC Program Assistant

About the Role

This role will support SSI’s Multicultural Sports Club (MSC) staff to plan, coordinate and conduct MSC programs and activities, such as Youth Night. The MSC strives to promote social inclusion through sport by encouraging the concept of sportsmanship and mateship across cultural boundaries while seeking to address the barriers that culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) youth have to face when participating in sport, as well as linking them with local social, sporting and vocational opportunities.

When and commitment

Various times Monday – Friday. No more than 16 hours per week 

What you will do

  • Support MSC team with the planning of community sports and recreation programs, activities and events to increase participation and program promotion
  • Supporting the community coaches, and other relevant stakeholders, to deliver sports and recreation programs
  • Assist with MSC Program administration support, including program reporting, equipment stocktake and activity preparation and pack up
  • Supporting with client transports (if applicable)
  • Follow all reasonable directions provided by supervisor, or delegate

 Essential

  • An interest in sport to promote community participation and inclusion
  • Excellent organizational, time management and teamwork skills
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills, with a welcoming and friendly attitude
  • Ability to work independently and use initiative

Desirable

  • Community services, sport management, education or other related tertiary qualifications
  • Ability to speak relevant community language
  • Previous experience working with people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) backgrounds, in particular refugees

Volunteer MSC Driver and Program Support

About the Role

This role will support participants who have limited access to transport and are socially isolated to participate in Access’ Multicultural Sports Club (MSC) programs and activities, such as Youth Night, by driving them to and from their home to the activities. The MSC strives to promote social inclusion through sport by encouraging the concept of sportsmanship and mateship across cultural boundaries while seeking to address the barriers that culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) youth have to face when participating in sport, as well as linking them with local social, sporting and vocational opportunities.

You will use SSI’ car, which can be picked up from SSI Gateway, 91 Wembley Road, Woodridge and drive participants to Gould Adams Community Centre, 558 Kingston Road, Kingston.

You will also have the opportunity to build your community/sports program development and implementation skills and knowledge by supporting staff to run and manage program requirements and objectives. 

When and commitment

Various times Monday – Friday. A minimum 3 month commitment is requested.

What you will do

  • Pick up and transport program participant/s to and from their home to MSC at Kingston
  • Assist staff to run and manage programs and activities  
  • Maintain confidentiality and keep client information securely
  • Actively support SSI Group’s vision and values
  • Adhere to SSI Group policies and procedures
  • Follow all reasonable directions provided by supervisor, or delegate

 Essential

  • Must have a driver’s license and good driving history
  • Knowledge and understanding of the multicultural sector including relevant government policies and programs.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills

Desirable

  • Previous experience working with people from diverse backgrounds
