Mission Statement

Safe Families Canada is creating a world where children are safe, and families are together.  With over 300,000 children and youth in Canada living in vulnerable families and at risk of abuse and neglect, SFC is on a mission to transform families and ensure that no family will face a crisis alone. Volunteers, known as the Circle of Support, are motivated to practice biblical hospitality, disruptive generosity and compassion fuelled by mercy.  Host Families, Family Friends, Family Coaches and Resource Friends support families in crisis while they get back on their feet.

Be a Family Friend

Safe Families Canada is committed to supporting parents and bringing love, connection, and healing to families who may feel isolated or alone.

As a Family Friend, your consistent presence offers stability—helping strengthen relationships and support families as they move toward healthier, thriving lives.

As a Family Friend, you will:

Support, Share, and Strengthen

  • Support parents through meaningful friendship and consistent care.
  • Share encouragement, practical guidance, and helpful insights on parenting and everyday life.
  • Strengthen families by connecting them to community resources, low-cost services, and needed supports.

You will also:

Listen, Link, and Lift

  • Listen with empathy, offering a safe space for parents to be heard and understood.
  • Lead families toward vital supports, including schools, clinics, counselling, churches, and other community resources.
  • Lift families by advocating for their needs and supporting them through challenges, including when children are placed with Host Families.

Family Friends are trained volunteers, supported by a strong network of community partners and resources, ensuring they are equipped to walk alongside families with care and confidence.

Host Family

Be a Host Family

Host Families open their homes as an expression of Christ’s compassion—living out radical hospitality by welcoming the children of families in crisis with dignity, generosity, and love. In doing so, they create space for healing, belonging, and hope during a difficult season.

As a Host Family, your home becomes more than a place of safety—it becomes a place where children are truly seen, valued, and embraced. Through simple, consistent acts of care, you help restore a sense of stability and connection. Even in a short time, your presence can have a lasting impact on a child’s life.

As a Host Family, you will:

Serve, Shelter, and Support

  • Serve children and families with compassion, reflecting Christ’s love through everyday acts of care and radical hospitality.
  • Shelter children by providing a safe, stable, and culturally sensitive home environment free from harm.
  • Support each child’s well-being by creating a sense of belonging, routine, and emotional security.

You will also:

Love, Lead, and Lift

  • Love children unconditionally, welcoming them as part of your family and helping them feel valued and at home.
  • Lead with consistency by following program guidelines and partnering closely with Family Coaches.
  • Lift children through encouragement, patience, and attentive care during a time of uncertainty.

Host Families are carefully screened and equipped to provide high-quality care. This includes police checks, references, a home assessment, and ongoing training and support. Host Families serve on a volunteer basis, motivated by a desire to make a meaningful difference.

Placements are temporary, with an average stay of approximately 2 weeks (ranging from one day to three months).

Children are referred from a wide range of community partners—including hospitals, schools, daycares, social services, shelters, treatment centres, and other local organizations—highlighting the vital role Host Families play in responding to real and urgent needs.

Leadership Council

Be Part of the Leadership Council

The SFC Leadership Council is an advisory (non-governing) group of professionals and lay people who want to steward their time, talents and giftings to help launch a Safe Families Chapter in their community. These diverse and energetic groups of people are fueled by a passion to help make local chapters as successful as possible, so that in-crisis families in their communities can keep their children safe and families together. These groups are specially designed to help support local Chapter Directors and staff with advice, support, prayer and fundraising. They use their influence to help the chapter grow through various connections and funding opportunities.

Ministry Lead

Be a Ministry Lead

Ministry Leads are based in a local church and are involved in recruiting and supporting volunteers, promoting Safe Families Canada within their church community and acting as a liaison with Safe Families Canada staff.

Resource Friend

Be A Resource Friend

A lack of basic resources can often be what moves a struggling family to become a family in crisis.

Tangible items such as a crib or coat, or services from a dentist or mechanic may be the hand of help a family needs to keep themselves from losing touch with hope.

Safe Families “Resource Friends” are a collection of resource rich individuals who have the ability to share their skills or material goods with families that are on the edge. Guided by our Family Friends, these gifts are connected directly to the urgent, pressing needs of families.

Resources Friends include:

  1. Counselors
  2. Dentists
  3. Doctors
  4. Educators
  5. Lawyers
  6. Mechanics
  7. Those able to share material goods
  8. People able to help with transportation, lawn care, English language acquisition, home improvements, etc.

By becoming a Resource Friend you fill an essential role in the Safe Families ministry. No one can provide exactly what you can share with a family in crisis.

Family Coach

Be a Family Coach

You play a vital role as a Family Coach, walking alongside parents in crisis and helping them move toward stability and hope.

As a Family Coach, you will:

Support, Safeguard, and Strengthen

  • Support the Host Family, ensuring they have the resources needed to provide a safe, nurturing environment.
  • Safeguard each child by assessing safety within 48 hours of placement and continuing weekly check-ins for at least a month.
  • Strengthen families in need by connecting them with community resources and helping coordinate appointments.
  • Steward healthy relationships by facilitating connection between the Host Family and the family in need with compassion and empathy.

Listen, Lead, and Lift

  • Listen attentively, creating space for Host Families and families in need to share openly and feel heard.
  • Lead with clarity by managing expectations and guiding both families through challenges with wisdom and care.
  • Lift others through empathy, reassurance, and practical support—offering hope, problem-solving alongside community resources, and a calm, steady presence in stressful situations.
