General Interests

Battlefords, SK

Launched in 2024, the Battlefords Chapter of Safe Families Canada is intentionally connecting with local churches, businesses, and community members who share our heart for families. The Battlefords is a beautiful community, rich with caring people and excellent family programs. And yet, we continue to see families facing crisis—moments when traditional services are stretched thin or unable to meet the full scope of need.

As a fairly new Chapter, we are excited to see the Church rise with compassion, ready to serve in the name of Jesus. We believe God is opening doors for His people to step in with love, practical support, and real presence. Our vision is to come alongside families during vulnerable seasons, offering connection, encouragement, and community—so no family has to walk through crisis alone.

General Interests

Host Family

Be A Host Family

Safe Families Canada recruits Host Families that see their participation in this program as a way of living out the compassion of Christ by caring for the hurting.  Volunteer Host Families with this mindset are able to bring the healing dynamic of Christian love to children and families in crisis.

It is the policy of Safe Families to approve the most competent and effective Host Family parents to care for the needs of the children.  The ultimate goal is to provide a culturally relevant and secure family that is free from any potential dangers to the safe child. It is also important for the child to feel loved and cared for, and feel as though they are a part of the family. The impact you have in the life of this child is significant.  Host Families are screened through a process which involves police checks, references, and a home study assessment. They receive training and serve without compensation.

Children are monitored in the host home by SFC Family Coaches to ensure compliance to guidelines. Average length of stay is 45 days with ranges from 1 day to 3 months.

Ages of children placed: New born infants through parenting teens.
Referral Sources: Community organizations, day care centres, hospitals, drug treatment and homeless centres, prisons, schools, police stations, adoption agencies, etc.

Steps to Becoming a Host Family

Given the high level of trust and liability involved in caring for a child from another family, the process for serving as a Host Family involves successfully undergoing a detailed screening and training process conducted by trained staff in a confidential manner.

1. Contact Form: Fill in our contact form and indicate your interest in becoming a Host Family. We will then send you a Application & Home Study Assessment application to fill out, and the Host Family Handbook.

2. Police Background Check & Letters of Reference: Upon receiving your application, you will be required to complete a background check and a Letter of Reference form, to be filled out by three referees.

3. Training: At this point, you will be set up with a login for the Safe Families database, where you will complete the online training videos.

4. Home Study: After all the above steps are complete, we will contact you to set up a time for a home visit. This visit gives us an opportunity to get acquainted and also allow our staff to visually confirm that your home is a safe place.

Host Family Clearance: Once these steps are completed, you will be ready to welcome a child(ren) of a placing family into your home.

Edmonton, AB

Safe Families Canada|Edmonton Chapter is part of a national team that is fueled by compassion to keep children safe and families intact while they walk through times of crisis. Safe Families partners with churches to create extended family-like support for families who find themselves in crisis. This can look like a family opening their home to a preschooler for a week while a single mom is in the hospital, or helping with drop-offs, pick-ups, and other errands while a grandma navigates becoming the primary guardian of her three grandkids, or meeting regularly with a mom of a teen who feels overwhelmed and at the end of her rope. While the type of support is unique to each situation, our heart is to create a caring community around families who find themselves in crisis, so that they can continue to care for their children while finding their way through crisis and hopefully meet Jesus along the way.

Safe Families Canada|Edmonton launched in September 2020, during the global pandemic. Since then the generous-hearted people of the Edmonton region have walked with 39 families in crisis. Our team of amazing volunteers has hosted kids for 235 nights so far this year. We love to partner with both organisations and churches who have a heart to see every child grow up in a safe and well supported family. Given the size of the Edmonton region, and the snowball effect as the word spreads about what we do, we are always looking for more partners to join with us to love families experiencing a crisis and demonstrate Jesus’ compelling invitation to life by becoming His hands and feet.

With a committed team of staff and volunteers, the chapter continues to build awareness across the region, strengthening its foundation for long-term sustainability and growth.

Their ongoing work is made possible through the generosity and encouragement of individual donors, local churches, community partners, and businesses who believe in creating a safety net for families before crises escalate. Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge, ON

The Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge Chapter has been a part of Safe Families Canada since 2018. Rooted in biblical hospitality, radical generosity, and compassion, we work to keep children safe, strengthen families, and see lives transformed through community.

Through a network of trained volunteers from local churches, we host children short-term, walk alongside parents as coaches and friends, and provide practical help such as meals, rides, supplies, mentoring, and more. Every situation looks different, but the goal remains the same: to offer extended-family-like support so parents are not alone during difficult seasons.

Our Key Outcomes:

  1. Strengthen family resiliency

  2. Keep children safe and out of child welfare where possible

  3. Preserve family unity

  4. Equip and mobilize churches for compassion ministry

This could look like caring for a baby while a mother is hospitalized, mentoring a single parent of a teen, or providing meals and transportation for a family with limited resources.

Our Chapter has supported 150+ families through 160+ volunteers, in partnership with local churches and community agencies. As the need for connection and support continues to grow, we are always welcoming new volunteers who desire to help children thrive and families stay together.

We invite you to join us—opening hearts, hands, and homes to the most vulnerable—living out Jesus’ call to love our neighbours as ourselves.
