Postnatal Ward Volunteer - Role Description
Role Title: Maternity Volunteer
Age: 18 +
Department Postnatal Ward
Hospital site: Oldham
Accountable to: Voluntary Site Coordinator
This is a flexible volunteering opportunity 3-4 hours per session
Monday – Sunday - 8am – 8pm Max 3 sessions per week unless more hours are agreed by Voluntary Services Team
The Postnatal Ward at the Royal Oldham Hospital is a very busy unit, over 5,000 babies are born every year in Oldham. The Royal Oldham Hospital supports & provides maternity services to the communities of both Oldham & Rochdale.
An individual risk assessment will be carried out based on your occupational health report. An enhanced DBS check will also be required for this role as you will be volunteering in clinical areas with children or vulnerable adults. We will pay for the DBS check.
Roles & Responsibilities
• On arrival of shift, check in with the co-ordinator and to ask if there any areas that you cannot go into.
• Helping keep the general ward areas tidy & clutter free.
• Welcoming & directing patients & visitors on the ward; including answering the call bell door.
• Putting together leaflet & patient information packs to aid & support staff.
• Supporting the hydration & nutritional needs of our patients. Helping to distribute snacks/food/drink to patients as directed or supervised. Including giving out secured ready to feed baby milk bottles.
• Talking to our patients, & their families, & providing companionship.
• Supporting/escorting parents to see their baby who is on NICU Support the family on discharge by helping carry bags to the main entrance. Either walking with them or pushing the mother in a wheelchair to NICU or the Main Entrance. Wheelchair training will be provided.
• Assisting our patients with basic tasks such as packing bags, passing them things that are out of reach and collecting times which may have been left on the previous ward.
• Support the ward with responder tasks to improve patient flow such as moving/delivering items or equipment between wards, taking swabs to the lab, collecting/delivering pharmacy items.
• Support the ward with a Friends & Family Test [FFT] maternity survey to gather views of patients & their families of their experience.
Skills and experience
• Possess good communication skills
• Possess good interpersonal skills including listening skills
• Have an interest in maternity services
• Confident & self-motivated
• Have a friendly, outgoing personality
• Desirable experience in a caring role
• Ability to be able to deal with often sensitive & personal information
• Show commitment to want to support patients, relatives, and visitors.
• Be reliable & flexible.
• Understand the importance of confidentiality.
• Desirable - competent in other languages.
Volunteers MUST NOT
• Access, or document anything, in the medical or nursing records
• Answer enquiries, or offer advice, or a medical opinion about patient’s medical conditions/treatment or assist with anything of a clinical nature. You must signpost the patient to the clinical staff or as a member of the clinical staff to go and speak with the patient
• Discuss your own medical conditions in front of patients
• Breach confidential information - Volunteers are reminded of the importance of confidentiality, always. Under no circumstances must you discuss patients’ affairs with any person other than the relevant staff.
• Provide physical, or personal, care to patients, including the manual handling of patients
Roles and responsibilities of the Voluntary Service Lead
• To recruit volunteers to the role following Trust recruitment guidelines and ensure that the necessary recruitment checks have been completed
• To liaise with the ward manager/lead nurse about the suitability of new volunteers
• To provide day to day support for the volunteers, as required.
