"Hospice has taught me that what matters most at the end isn’t noise or news or unfinished plans. It’s being present. It’s giving someone the dignity of being seen and held. Volunteering with hospice is the most sacred work that I will ever have the honor of doing".

Hospice is special care for those living with a life-limiting illness. This care extends to the patient’s loved ones, family and caregivers. At Atrium Health Hospice & Palliative Care Union and Atrium Health Hospice Anson, our goal is to help people live their last days as comfortably as possible, surrounded by family and friends. The unmet needs of those who are dying, and those who care and grieve for them, motivates our work.

General Interests

Crafting

Prayer shawls, lap blankets, quilts, baby hats, stuffed toys...the list goes on and on with the many ways our talented volunteers share their gifts with our patients! We welcome any and all ideas of handmade items to lift the spirits of our patients. If you have an idea of something you'd like to share, please let us know and we'll work with you to ensure it is safe for the hospital environment.

Hospice Patient Facing Roles

When you become a hospice volunteer you become part of a very special team who help to make every day count by bringing joy and enhancing our patient's quality of life. There are many ways to help as a hospice volunteer. We help you find the right fit for your unique interests, talents and abilities.

Office Support/Administrative

Volunteers do amazing work behind the scenes to help many departments with special projects such as creating patient education folders, helping staff phones, stocking items, or assisting with computer projects. We'll help you find the right project work that interests you!

Pet Program

Our four-legged friends and their volunteer handlers bring joy and reduce anxiety for patients, visitors and teammates through our animal assisted therapy program. Dogs and at some sites, miniature horses, must be certified for animal assisted (pet) therapy and visit throughout our hospitals. They are beloved by all!

Special Event and Fundraising
Fundraising and Special Events Volunteers play an important role in supporting our mission by helping create memorable, successful events throughout the year. This team assists with activities such as event set‑up and breakdown, guest check‑in, hospitality, and onsite support for special initiatives—including our annual Golf Tournament.  Volunteers may also help with sponsorship outreach, event logistics, and other tasks that contribute to a smooth and enjoyable experience for participants.
This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy teamwork, engaging with the community, and contributing to meaningful events that directly support our programs and services.
Please complete the application and we will call you with details. No additional onboarding training is necessary.
Musical Talent Opportunities

Our volunteer musicians visit patients and gathering spaces within our hospitals to play music that provides a soothing escape from pain and isolation. Musicians typically play instruments such as piano, flute, harp, or any stringed instrument. Their talent is a gift to all -- our patients, teammates and visitors!
