City of Pleasanton Public Library: Booklegger
What is the Booklegger Program?
Booklegger is a cooperative program between the Pleasanton Public Library and the Pleasanton Unified School District. Booklegger volunteers visit PUSD classrooms to read stories, share book talks and provide lists of suggested books for students, curated to each grade level K-5. Introducing lively, interesting and diverse books to children of all ages contributes to the success and achievement of Pleasanton’s youth and builds a connection to the Pleasanton Library. If you enjoy children’s literature and sharing your love of reading, consider becoming a Pleasanton Library Booklegger volunteer!
What a Booklegger volunteer does:
- Volunteers attend 15 hours of training: 2.5 hours per week for six weeks. The library is planning to offer training for new volunteers in fall 2024. Please contact the Booklegger Coordinator at booklegger@cityofpleasantonca.gov to learn more about the training schedule.
- After training, volunteers commit to visiting 5-10 classrooms twice each year for at least one school year.
- Volunteers visit classrooms in grades K-5, giving 30 to 45 minute book presentations.
- Presentations may include short booktalks, reading aloud or simple science and craft demonstrations.
- Volunteers select books for their programs from the library’s Booklegger Book Collection.
- The program is flexible. Bookleggers determine the dates and times of their school visits.
- All Booklegger volunteers must be over the age of 18.
Booklegger volunteers make an important contribution to the educational enrichment of Pleasanton children. Volunteers say that the best reward is the joy and enthusiasm of the children and their teachers.
