We run the Campbell River Senior Peer Counselling Program for men and women aged 55+. Seniors in the community are provided with emotional support by trained senior peer support volunteers. Volunteers need to attend a four day training session that happens twice yearly. Volunteers must submit a criminal record check including for vulnerable populations. Volunteers are matched with seniors in the community who are referred for peer counselling support to help them through emotional difficulties, life changes, social isolation, and other personal issues. Typically volunteers see one or two seniors for one hour each per week for several months. We also require that volunteers attend twice monthly senior peer counsellor group meetings; one is an educational meeting about a topic relevant to senior's health. Interested volunteers may apply through this website or call the Senior Peer Counselling program coordinator at 250-287-3044. This is a program of the Vancouver Island North Women's Resource Society.
