Position Title:                          Sunflower Day Program Volunteer

Placement Type:                      In person

Location:                                 3333 Finch Ave East

Volunteer Hours:                     Flexible hours between Monday-Friday 9am-3pm

Client Group:                          SPLC Clients

Reports to:                               Living Well Manager & Day Program Team Lead  

 

Position Summary: 

The Sunflower Day Program helps individuals with dementia live a better quality of life through engaging activities and care. As a volunteer, you’ll assist staff with activities that encourage social interaction and well-being

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Assist Staff: Assist program staff in organizing and facilitating activities designed for participants with dementia, while also helping with sanitizing, preparing simple snacks and coffee, and serving readymade lunch.
  • Participants: Help with activities like arts and crafts, music and games
  • One-on-One Support: Spend time with participants who need extra help or prefer quieter activities.
  • Provide Emotional Support: Encourage socializing and create a friendly, respectful environment.
  • Monitor Well-Being: Help ensure participants are comfortable and communicate any changes in behavior or mood to staff.

 

Skills & Qualifications: 

  • Compassionate and Caring: A genuine desire to help those with dementia.
  • Patience and Reliability: Able to remain calm and flexible while reliably fulfilling responsibilities.
  • Active Listening: Good at listening and making participants feel heard.
  • Creativity: Help create fun and engaging activities tailored to clients with cognitive challenges.
  • Understanding Dementia: Basic knowledge of dementia is helpful.
  • Confidentiality: Maintain privacy about participants’ personal and medical information.
  • Teamwork: Work well with staff and other volunteers.

 

 

 

Orientation/Training:

  • Training: Training will be provided, including one-on-one sessions to ensure you are comfortable and confident in the role.
  • Ongoing Support: Regular check-ins to ensure that volunteers feel supported and can provide feedback.
  • Volunteer Services will conduct orientation on organization’s policies and procedures, including COVID-19 measures. 
  • IPAC Mandatory training for onsite positions 
  • Organizational Training for new volunteers 
  • Position related orientation and training will be performed by direct supervisor

 

Time Commitment

  • Weekly Hours: 1-3 hours or more per week
  • Ongoing: We value volunteers who can commit consistently over the long term. Volunteers with a passion for contributing and sharing valuable life experiences will be a great asset to the program.

 

Supervision and Evaluation:

  • Supervision and support will be provided by the Living Well Manager & Day Program Team Lead.

Other:

  • Vulnerable Service Sector Check screening is mandatory.
