Driving Mentors - Wheels in Motion
The Wheels in Motion Program offers driver experience under volunteer supervision to young people in the City of Playford who have barriers preventing them from gaining necessary driving hours to sit a provisional license test.
Volunteers receive training, insurance, a safe vehicle and ongoing support. Women and men from all cultural backgrounds are encouraged to get involved. Volunteering as a driver supervisor is meaningful, practical and rewarding. It is an opportunity to play a positive, caring role in the life of a disadvantaged young person. Mentoring not only helps a young person practically, but also provides a positive role model for them in a relaxed atmosphere.
Volunteers are required to have the following:
- full South Australian Driver Licence and good driving record
- commitment of at least two hours per week
- satisfactory completion of Police, SA License, First Aid and Working With Children checks
- flexible, patient and reliable
Training involves three sessions with a qualified driving instructor as part of a driver assessment. All learner drivers also receive professional lessons and will only be paired with a mentor after they have successfully mastered the basics.
