Hours: We prefer interns to start around 7 to 8am and be available for 6-8 hours to allow sufficient time for field and/or office work.  Nevertheless we are flexible and will try our best to help you balance your time here with your school schedule.

Internship description: The Monitoring Section of the City of San Diego Transportation and Storm Water Department is responsible for monitoring and water sampling required by the City's MS4 Permit.  MS4 stands for Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System, which includes City owned/maintained storm drain structures (e.g. gutters, inlets, pipes) that convey dry and wet weather runoff to outfalls.  The MS4 Permit is issued by the state and regulates discharges from the City's storm drain outfalls to receiving waters (rivers, lakes, and ocean).  Our section deals mainly with the dry weather portion of the MS4 permit.  As such, we monitor for illicit discharges such as washing, over-irrigation, and other types of pollutant-containing runoff.  We also monitor uncontrollable discharges such as groundwater.  Interns will assist Biologists with sampling, testing, and investigations related to the MS4 permit.  Duties include:

  • field, lab, and administrative support tasks related to storm drain monitoring
  • calibrating meters and performing preventative maintenance
  • collecting and testing water quality samples
  • making observations and collecting data
  • data entry and other office tasks
  • maintaining clean workspaces and vehiclesField work involves:
  • driving
  • hiking
  • heavy lifting (e.g. sample coolers, lifting manhole lids)
  • hazardous conditions (e.g. heat/cold, snakes, ticks, wildlife, poison oak)
  • stinky water (you never know what gets flushed down the storm drain)
  • sunshine, beaches, streams, and riversInterns assist in the office with data entry and other administrative tasks, using software such as:
  • Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • ArcGIS
