Hours: We prefer interns to start between 7 and 8am and be available for 6-8 hours to allow sufficient time for field and/or office work.  However, we are flexible and will work with them to balance their school and work schedule.

Internship description: The Floodplain & Asset Management Section of the City of San Diego, Transportation and Storm Water Department is responsible for overseeing the City's storm water infrastructure.  This includes knowing what we own, their locations and condition, and maintaining that information in a way that is accessible and useful to other City staff.  The management intern positions are filled by students seeking a relevant undergraduate or graduate degree in civil engineering, environmental, construction or related fields of study.  Interns assist staff with GIS research, contributing to reports and presentations, preparing exhibits, advanced GIS analysis and some investigative fieldwork.  Duties include:

  • desktop, field, and administrative support tasks related to floodplain and asset management
  • research and reporting on data
  • data entry
  • collecting and verifying GPS and GIS data
  • maintaining clean workspaces and vehicles
  • fieldwork involves driving, hiking, heavy lifting (e.g. manhole lids), hazardous conditions (e.g. heat/cold, snakes, ticks, wildlife, poison oak), soiled water (you never know what gets flushed down the storm drain), sunshine, beaches, streams, and rivers
  • interns assist in the office with data entry and other administrative tasks, using software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, ArcGIS
