Therapeutic Recreation Services Program Internship in the Parks & Recreation Department.

Internship description: Interns are supervised by Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists and the internship meets the requirements set by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification and California Board of Recreation and Park Certification.  Interns will assist in planning, organizing, conducting and evaluating therapeutic recreation and leisure activities for individuals with all types of disabilities, ages 3-adult.  Activities include small group activities, large special events, day camps, sports tournaments, field trips, arts and crafts, cultural events, dances, individualized leisure counseling, and leisure education programs. 

Assist Therapeutic Recreation Specialist in conducting assessments, developing goals and objectives, writing progress reports, and evaluations for therapeutic recreation activities.  Conduct individual case studies as appropriate.  Examples of specific therapeutic recreation activities offered include:

-Adaptive Sports (for persons with physical disabilities)

-Inclusion Program (for individuals with disabilities participating in activities in their neighborhood recreation centers)

-Independent Club (for adults with developmental disabilities who are working on increasing independence in the leisure life)

-Young Adult Club (provides intense social and leisure skills training to small group of young adults with developmental disabilities)

-Leisure Skills Development

Plan and lead at least one event, to include developing program goals and objectives, activity selection, budget preparation, volunteer direction, publicity, evaluation ,etc.  Perform various administrative tasks which may include answering phone, providing customer service, taking program registrations, written correspondence, soliciting donations and sponsorships, attending meetings, equipment inventory, etc.  Assist in public relations presentations and speaking engagements.  Represent program at community resource fairs, etc.  Complete one special project (optional).  Examples of past projects include developing new leisure education manual, revising program manuals, etc.
