Internship description: Assist in planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating therapeutic recreation and leisure activities for individuals with all types of disabilities and older adults. Activities include small group activities, large special events, day camps, sports tournaments, field trips, arts and crafts, cultural events, dances, health and wellness and individualized leisure counseling. Assist Therapeutic Recreation Specialist and Recreation Specialist in conducting assessments, developing goals and objectives, writing progress reports, and evaluations for therapeutic recreation activities. Conduct individual case studies as appropriate. Examples of specific therapeutic recreation activities offered include: • Inclusion Program (for children with disabilities participating in activities in their neighborhood recreation centers) • Adaptive Fitness (for persons with physical disabilities) • Independent Club (for adults with developmental disabilities who are working on increasing independence in their leisure life) • Kick Back Club (provides social and leisure skills training to teens with developmental disabilities) • AgeWell Services (provides social, recreational, fitness programs for individuals 55 and over) Plan and lead at least one event, to include developing program goals and objectives, activity selection, budget preparation, volunteer direction, publicity, evaluation, etc. Perform various administrative tasks which may include answering phone, providing customer service, taking program registrations, written correspondence, soliciting donations and sponsorships, attending meetings, equipment inventory, etc. Assist in public relation presentations and speaking engagements. Represent program at community resource fairs, etc. Complete one special project. Examples of past projects include developing new leisure education manual, revising program manuals, starting new program, revising and updating current resources, etc. (Completing a special project is optional according to the requirements of the University and the needs of the program during the time of the internship). Internship meets National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification and California Board of Recreation and Park Certification. Requirement: Student is in their last year of University coursework, studying Recreation Therapy. Internships are 15 weeks (600 hours).
