How you will contribute as part of the TRCA Volunteer team:

The Citizen Science Volunteer Program provides volunteers with new skills that could be transferrable for future career opportunities in the environmental field or to provide unique and interesting learning activities for anyone who is passionate about the environment and would like to give back. Through the program, volunteers will help make areas more resilient and adaptable, increasing success and population growth.  We train and mentor volunteers to assist TRCA staff with a variety of priority projects.

What you will do as a volunteer:

Invasive management allows volunteers to have an immediate, positive impact on naturalized areas within the GTA. You will be going to sites and trained on removing plants that are competing with native species, allowing the native species to grow and thrive.  Removing invasive species also helps birds and pollinators find the most nutritious and resilient plants for food and habitat and stops the spread of noxious weeds into your homes and trails. If you like to see an immediate improvement to an area and a job well done, invasive management is a perfect fit.

What will you need to succeed:

  • Passion for or knowledge of environmental topics, with a focus on local wildlife, native plants, and environmental conservation
  • Native plant identification skills is an asset
  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Physically able to walk on uneven terrain
  • Willingness to learn
  • Volunteers must be 14 years of age or older
  • Experience with fieldwork and/or collecting data is an asset
