Snow Angels

During adverse wintry conditions, Snow Angels play a vital role in keeping the moving by clearing snow and ice on the borough’s side streets. This helps the community to carry on safely with their day to day activities and is particularly important for elderly and vulnerable residents who may become isolated during periods of extreme weather

Community minded volunteers can act on their own or as part of a team and are provided with a free 20 kilogramme bag of grit, a branded high-visibility vest, protective gloves and a snow scoop or plastic shovel. Snow Angels are also provided with training and Healthy and Safety.

Purpose of a Snow Angel

To clear snow and ice from footways and pathways during wintry weather conditions

 

Main Tasks

The types of tasks typically undertaken by a [Snow angel] include:

  • Clearing snow and ice from footways, pavements and any other area deemed a hazard especially for children, vulnerable and elderly residents
  • Remaining vigilant in and around neighbourhood to assist any person struggling in the snow

Volunteering hours and duration of role

  • Volunteers can give as much or as little time as they wish when notified that there will be adverse weather conditions across the borough
  • This role is ongoing as long as volunteers feel physically able

 

Supervision

  • [Snow Angels] will be managed by the [Projects and Operations officer] who will send a text notification to all volunteers [x] days in advance to notify of any upcoming adverse weather conditions
  • The [Project and Operations Officer] will also communicate with all Snow Angels to enquire whether any new equipment is needed and when we are expecting wintry weather conditions

 

What we look for in volunteers

  • The ability to carry out light manual work
  • Good team worker (where applicable)
  • A friendly, approachable manner

  • A can do attitude and timely response to any snow present on your street

 

Other information

  • For Health and Safety purposes, we ask that you please seek advice from a Doctor before taking part in this opportunity If you suffer from any heart conditions
  • The Government through the Department for Transport have clarified that “there’s no law stopping you from clearing snow and ice on the pavement outside your home or public spaces. It’s unlikely you’ll be sued or held legally responsible for any injuries on the path if you have cleared it carefully
