Angel's Watch Special Projects Volunteers

Angels’ Watch Shelter provides safe, emergency, housing and necessities for women and families who are experiencing homelessness. The program mission involves volunteers in delivering services.  Residents who volunteer in the shelter often express feelings of self-worth and belonging.

 

Special Projects Volunteers collaborate with the Program Director to bolster community engagement with Angel’s Watch. They will expand the capacity of the staff to be responsive to residents.

 

Duties & Responsibilities: 

Volunteers' activities will be dictated by the opportunities available in the community, the current needs of the Angel's Wath team and residents, and the interest and abilities of the volunteers. Examples of special projects volunteers may do include:

  • Using agency standard procedures to draft applications for community resources, for example, a Volunteer Maryland Coordinator.
  • Recruit and coordinate Provide-a-Meal teams from area churches, service organizations, schools, families, companies, and others.
  • Organize family friendly special events for residents by engaging the community. Examples: Back-to-School Fair, Halloween Party, Christmas Party, Easter Egg Hunt, Mother's Day Brunch, Father's Day BBQ, etc.

 

Qualifications: 

  • Volunteers must be at least 18 years old 
  • Demonstrate technical skills to conduct online searches
  • Knowledge of community resources, how to connect with them, how to find additional resources and connections
  • Complete Catholic Charities screening: application, present government ID (or alternative), TB test, up-to-date COVID-19 vaccination and booster record, criminal history check, reference check, and volunteer orientation

  • Cheerful, outgoing, optimistic, and calm demeanor 
  • Compassionate and understanding of people experiencing homelessness
  • Recognize the dignity of each individual person
  • Able recognize people and remember names
  • Able to juggle multiple tasks at once

Support: 

  • Volunteers will have a staff mentor and point of contact 
  • Volunteers will receive training in front desk operations 
  • Volunteers will become familiar with the Angels’ Watch shelter and team who operate it 

 

Time Commitment: 

  • 4-hour shifts; twice a month
  • Shifts are negotiable, including evenings and weekends   
  • On-site at Angels’ Watch Shelter; potential for doing research from home after completing at least 2 shifts on-site
