Dental Hygienist

Quality dental care is essential to everyone's health and well-being but is not accessible to all. Volunteers with Catholic Charities Dental Services work to eliminate this health disparity for adults and children who are uninsured by providing quality and affordable dental care. Volunteer Dental Hygienists review a patient’s history and complaints, perform a dental assessment, and provide preventive and therapeutic services. Volunteer Hygienists are vital to ensuring each patient has a positive experience and leaves feeling knowledgeable and empowered to take care of their oral health. 

 

Duties & Responsibilities:   

  • Ensure good communication with patients in the delivery of dental care 
  • Perform clinical evaluation of patients 
  • Make appropriate referrals for dental/periodontal needs 
  • Perform clinical treatments 
  • Provide oral hygiene instructions and oral health care education to patients
  • Maintain patient records via electronic medical records. (eCW dental software)
  • Promote awareness of the need for dental care through the education of patients and the community
  • Responsible for logging own hours on volunteer management system 

 

Desired Skills, Experience & Characteristics:  

  • Verbal and interpersonal communication skills 
  • Ability to work as a member of a team 
  • Bilingual: English – Spanish is preferred 

 

Qualifications: 

  • Graduate of an accredited dental hygiene program 
  • Possess appropriate state hygiene license and malpractice insurance (DC or Maryland) 
  • Experience working with the Latino Community

Time Commitment: 

  • 2-3 shifts/month. Available shifts:
    • At Susan Denison Mona Center:
      • From 8am-12pm / 1-4.30pm (Tuesday or Wednesday)
    • At Spanish Catholic Center DC
      • From 8am-1pm / 2-4.30pm (Tuesdays)
