Strong Families Initiative High School Intern

Brief Description of the project:

  • The Strong Families Initiative High School Intern will play a crucial role in facilitating support groups for youth by organizing and leading activities. This position offers an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of young people from diverse backgrounds by creating a supportive and engaging environment. Assist the program staff to plan, prepare for, and conduct group support sessions for young people who have recently migrated to our area from Central and South America.

Impact of the volunteer:

  • The intern's involvement will enhance the effectiveness of the Strong Families Initiative by providing essential support to the youth circles. This will allow for a more enriching experience for the participants and help foster a sense of community and belonging. The intern’s impact will be evaluated based on participant feedback and the smooth execution of group activities.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the planning and implementation of youth group activities.
  • Engage with youth participants to encourage participation and foster a positive atmosphere.
  • Provide support during group sessions, including setting up and cleaning up activities.
  • Help with communication and coordination between staff and participants.
  • Ensure all activities are inclusive and accessible for participants.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum age: High school student.
  • Proficiency in Spanish and English (fluency preferred).
  • Willingness to undergo additional training.
  • Culturally competent with the Latino community.
  • Creative and takes initiative.
  • Proficiency with the Office 365 suite.
  • Access to a personal computer and cell phone.

Time Commitment:

  • Ongoing Volunteers: High school interns are encouraged to sign up to serve for an academic year to help run multiple rounds of the youth circles, but the schedule can be adjusted if a student needs to sign up for a semester at a time. Minimum commitment of 6 months, with 4-6 hours per week. Volunteering can be scheduled on weekdays, weekends, and evenings as needed.

  • Accessibility: Site is a 12 minute walk from the Glenmont Metro Station or a 30 minute walk from the Wheaton Metro Station. Parking is also available for volunteers who choose to drive.
