Dental Assistant

Quality dental care is essential to everyone's health and well-being but is not accessible to all. Volunteers with Catholic Charities Dental Services work to eliminate this health disparity for adults and children who are uninsured by providing quality and affordable dental care. As a Volunteer Dental Assistant you will be the first to interact and the first to help patients. If you have strong communication skills, enjoy working with your hands as well as your mind and want a fulfilling volunteer experience, this is an excellent opportunity for you. 

 

Duties & Responsibilities:   

 

  • Follow all infection control procedures in treatment rooms and in the care of instruments 
  • Sterilize, disinfect and set up dental operatories and instruments 
  • Review patient’s medical history
  • Assist dentist during patient care
  • Expose and process dental radiographs as needed
  • Prepare specimens for laboratory pick-up and keep a log of cases pending
  • Serve as translator and interpreter for dentists who do not speak Spanish
  • Provide patient education during patient care, and post patient care
  • Schedule preventative maintenance on all dental equipment
  • Maintain dental supplies and place orders in an efficient manner
  • Document each procedure in the designated log
  • Keep the inventory log of instruments
  • Responsible for logging hours on volunteer management systems.
  • Maintain patient records via electronic medical records. (eCW dental software) 

 

Desired Skills, Experience & Characteristics: 

  • Bilingual: English – Spanish is preferred 
  • Ability to identify priority issues
  • Ability to work as a member of a team
  • Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Customer Service Oriented 

 

Qualifications: 

  • High school diploma or equivalency; Over the age of 18
  • Two (2) years' experience working in a Health Care environment, preferably in a dental setting
  • Experience working with the Latino Community
  • DC or MD DA license depending on site.

  • 2-3 shifts/month. Available shifts: 

  • At Spanish Catholic Center DC: 

  • Mon-Thu. 

  • From 8am-1pm / 2pm-4.30pm

  • Mon and Thu only - 4pm-8pm

  • At Susan Denison Mona Center: 

  • Mon-Fri. 

  • From 8am-12pm / 1-5pm 

  • At Catholic Charities Center: 

  • Mon-Thu. 

  • From 8am-1pm / 2pm-5pm 

  • Mon and Wed only - 4pm-8pm
