Employment Support Volunteer

Help newcomers to find gainful employment so they can have the dignity of providing for their families. You’ll help people along the path to pursue the stable, peaceful lives they want. If you are a dedicated and empathetic person who can empower individuals to navigate the complexities of the job market with confidence: we want you on our team. You’ll make a significant difference to people seeking our support. You’ll join the dedicated and highly functioning CC DC Employment Team and boost the effectiveness and efficiency of our program.

 

Catholic Charities Program Served:

  • The Catholic Charities Employment Support Program works to people to find and secure a good job.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

The Employment Helper Volunteer will:

  •  Conduct weekly job orientation sessions to educate clients on job search strategies, resume writing, interview techniques, and workplace expectations.
  • Collaborate with clients to identify their skills, interests, and employment goals.
  • Assist clients in completing job applications accurately and efficiently, ensuring all required information is provided.
  • Uncover opportunities for employment in industries most amenable to hiring the people we serve: retail, construction, landscaping, and cleaning
  • Provide ongoing support to clients throughout the job search process, including preparing for interviews and following up with employers.
  • Keep detailed records of client interactions, job leads, and placements in a confidential manner.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in human resources, social work, psychology, or a related field (preferred).
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Spanish-Speaker (Fluency preferred)
  • Ability to build rapport with clients and staff members of diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other relevant software applications.
  • Ability to always maintain confidentiality and professionalism.

Desired Skills, Experience & Characteristics:

  • Previous experience in employment services, career counseling, or related fields. (preferred).
  • Knowledge of job search strategies, resume writing, and interview preparation techniques. (preferred).

Support:

The Employment Helper volunteer will:

  • Receive training in Catholic Charities approach to job searching, applying to and preparing for working in the US
  • Shadow staff doing this work
  • Receive coaching from experienced staff members
  • Collaborate with the CC DC Employment Team staff members
  • Meet regularly with your staff point of contact to review expectations
  • Invited to participate in Team events and meetings

Time Commitment:

  • 1 year from September 2024 – September 2025
  • 4 hours a week during usual office hours

Location:

  • This is an in-person volunteer role
  • Spanish Catholic Center-Columbia Heights: 1618 Monroe St Washington DC
  • Parking is available at the SCC
  • The Columbia Heights metro station is ½ mile walk
  • Metro bus lines that run on 16th St NW stop ½ block away
