Role Summary: Sunridge Court is looking for a volunteer to lead relaxed and engaging Yiddish language and conversation sessions for residents. Many of our residents have a strong cultural and emotional connection to Yiddish and have expressed interest in reconnecting with the language through informal group sessions including conversation, reading, storytelling and shared memories. Some residents have also stated that they would enjoy learning the language themselves.
Time Commitment: 1 hour weekly or fortnightly. Monday afternoons or Wednesday mornings are currently available.
How this role makes a difference: This role helps residents reconnect with an important part of their cultural identity and heritage, while also encouraging social interaction, memory stimulation and meaningful conversation. The sessions would provide comfort, familiarity and enjoyment for many residents who have expressed a strong interest in Yiddish.
What you’ll be doing in this role:
- Leading informal Yiddish conversation sessions
- Encouraging residents to participate and share memories
- Supporting social interaction and group engagement
- Reading short texts, poems or songs where appropriate
- Creating a warm, welcoming and inclusive atmosphere
- Working alongside the Activities Team when required
Skills & experience required:
· Ability to speak and understand Yiddish
· Warm, patient and friendly personality
· Good communication and listening skills
· Confidence engaging with older people
· Interest in Jewish culture and heritage
· Reliability and consistency
