Role Summary: To present a pre prepared power point and short quiz to a group of members of the Connect@Friern Barnet community centre.
Time Commitment:
1 hours a fortnight running through the presentation
1 hour a fortnight presenting
How this role makes a difference:
Volunteering for Connect@Friern Barnet is a great way to make a huge impact in a short amount of time. By presenting these fortnightly PowerPoint and quiz sessions, you are enabling members of our community to enjoy, reminisce and learn whilst connecting with others and making friendships. Attending these presentations promotes cognitive stimulation, introducing cultural appreciation to the group, the opportunity for members to be nostalgic, sharing memories and feelings, enabling members to learn without being overwhelmed and enjoy and light-hearted, uplifting activity.
What you’ll be doing in this role:
- Selecting a fortnightly presentation from an online library, considering the interests of the members.
- Running through the PowerPoint and reading through the supporting material and quiz.
- Communicating with the Connect@ team to let them know what presentations you will be using in advance.
- Presenting the PowerPoint, encouraging group discussion, reminiscence, ask questions and give answers.
- Promote a supportive environment – ensuring all members are seated in good positions to see and hear the presentations clearly.
- Use each session to let members join in sharing any relevant information, stories, memories they may have.
- Reading and following our policies and procedures - designed to keep you and the clients we support safe and happy. We’ve got guidance around safeguarding, lone working, confidentiality and role boundaries to help with this. We’ll ask you to sign-in to say you understand them.
- Representing the charity well to the wider public.
Skills & experience you required:
- Have general IT skills, especially being able to use emails and how to turn on and present a PowerPoint presentation.
- Communication: Confidence and a clear speaking voice. Good conversational skills.
- Presenting: the ability to engage the audience whilst providing information from the presentation.
- Audience Engagement: Being able to interact with the members, asking questions and facilitating discussions to keep everyone interested.
- Use positive body language to convey enthusiasm and connect with the members.
- Time Management: Managing the presentation time effectively without having to rush or run out of the allotted time.
- Encouragement: foster a positive environment by motivating members and providing constructive feedback.
- Good organisational skills.
- Reliability, consistency and dependability.
- Patience, empathy and a non-judgemental attitude.
- The ability to work independently and as part of a team, to also stay within the role’s boundaries – recognising what should and shouldn’t be done and when to seek advice or report concerns.
Induction, Learning & Development:
Training is available so volunteers can carry out their roles to the highest professional standards, develop new skills, build confidence, make new friends and take on new and increasingly responsible tasks.
Jewish Care will provide the following training, essential for this role:
- Provide you with access to a Volunteer Handbook and all Policies and Procedures.
- Provide Induction Training: Getting to know Jewish Care, Communication & Disability Awareness, Boundaries & Confidentiality, Safeguarding, Health & Safety, GDPR.
- Provide on the job induction.

Next Steps to becoming a volunteer at Jewish Care:
Step 1:
Please complete an expression of interest form for this role, which will automatically create a profile on our volunteer management system. After you have applied, we will be in touch to discuss this role in more detail.

Step 2:
Following a successful conversation, with a member of the Volunteers Team or Hiring Manager you will be invited for an interview (and asked to bring identification with you).
Step 3:
Following a successful interview, you will be offered the volunteering role and asked to add further information into your volunteer profile, providing two references and completing a DBS (previously CRB) application form online. Additional paperwork may need to be completed for some roles e.g. volunteer driver.
This is a voluntary position that supports the work or our services and is not replacing the work of a paid member of staff. This role does not form any part of any contract of employment.
Step 4:
You will be invited to attend mandatory Volunteer Induction Training. Training is to enable volunteers to carry out roles to the highest professional standards, develop skills, build confidence and meet other new volunteers

Once we have received and recorded a suitable DBS, satisfactory references and training has been completed, you are officially part of the Jewish Care Volunteer network!
