Redland Wildlife Care Network

If you are dedicated to our native wildlife and are available during the day to respond to phone messages relating to injured wildlife, this volunteering opportunity could be for you!

Role Objective

The Redlands Wildlife Care Network (RWCN) is a phone advice service that operates every day of the year between the hours of 8am to 5pm.

Respond to community requests for assistance via the Redlands 24hr Wildlife Rescue Service answering service and connect them to the appropriate veterinary surgeries and/or wildlife carers.

Key Duties

  • Efficiently respond to all phone messages received and provide the caller with appropriate information.
  • Follow guidelines and procedures as set out in the Redlands Wildlife Care Network Volunteer Manual.
  • Keep accurate records of all calls, including the problem and outcome and provide records to the Volunteer Coordinator every month.

Necessary Skills and Experience

  • Genuinely care about the welfare of our native wildlife.
  • A personable demeanor and ability to interact comfortably, cheerfully and respectfully over the phone.
  • The ability to operate a smart phone and have basic technology skills for data entry (Survey123).
  • An ability to communicate respectfully and clearly.
  • A commitment to being available for rostered shifts.

Mandatory Licenses and Training

  • No mandatory licenses are required for this role.
  • Volunteers are required to undertake the following training:
  • Program Induction workshop.
  • Code of Conduct (every 2 years).
  • “Spend a day” with a current volunteer. (This is organised prior to commencing their first shift. It allows the new volunteer to become comfortable with equipment and procedures).

Expected Time Commitment

  • The RWCN operates every day of the year between 8am and 5pm.
  • One volunteer is assigned to each rostered day.
  • Volunteers are rostered for 1-2 days at a time between 8am and 5pm.
  • Volunteers are required to fulfil 4 to 6 days per month and the rosters are created in conjunction with volunteers.
  • If a volunteer is unable to fulfil their rostered day/s, they are to organise a replacement team member to cover the shift and/or inform the Extension Officer – Wildlife.”

Dress Code and PPE

  • Not applicable, as this service is operated via phone only.

Health, Safety and Wellbeing considerations

Identified potential risks and hazards and risk mitigation:

  • Exposure to details of injured and/or deceased animals – access to Council’s Employee Assistance Program (counselling)

Location/s

The RWCN operates in the Redland City and Koala Coast area, and is operated from the volunteers own home as it is provided via the phone only.
