Pottery Tutor

Purpose

To share your skills and knowledge with others by planning and delivering quality pottery courses which reflect the needs of individual adult learners and the broader community.

Location

Living & Learning Nillumbik – Eltham centre (739 Main Road)

Key Responsibilities

Plan and prepare a course or activity

  • Prepare a course outline which identifies learner outcomes and includes information on materials and/or equipment required.
  • Consider any participant specific information and accommodate identified needs.

Deliver the course or activity

  • Facilitate a friendly, safe and respectful learning environment.
  • Conduct a thorough induction to the clay Studio at the start of all courses, including covering the Safe Studio Practices.
  • Use an interactive tutoring approach that encourages a sense of shared responsibility for learning and enquiry.
  • Monitor learner progress and provide appropriate feedback.
  • Ensure under age participants are collected by the nominated parent/guardian, where applicable.
  • Know and follow all Clay Studio procedures.

Administration

  • Keep up to date class attendance records, and parent sign in sheets (for kids courses).
  • Ensure the venue is left in a secure, scrupulously clean and tidy condition at the end of each session.
  • Liaise with admin staff regarding any administrative requirements or equipment issues.
  • If delivering an after-hours course - be responsible for access, alarm and keys.
  • Ensure any volunteer hours completed are logged in the Better Impact database.

Evaluation

  • Continually evaluate your tutoring and the content of your classes, and how well the needs of your learners are met.
  • Attend relevant meetings where opportunities for development and improvement can be discussed.

Teamwork

  • Attend professional development opportunities provided by Living & Learning Nillumbik.
  • Contribute to the development of the program and assist with promotional activities.
  • Be guided by and liaise with the Clay Studio manager.
  • Be prepared to occasionally cover other pottery tutors classes.

Confidentiality

  • Learner information must be treated in confidence according to privacy legislation.
  • Centre information must be treated as commercial in confidence.

Policies

  • Conduct yourself according to Living & Learning Nillumbik values and code of conduct.
  • Comply with relevant legislation and all organizational policies & procedures.
  • Ensure all participants are aware of the OH&S obligations to provide a safe environment for all to participate and model good OH&S practices at all times

The Community Program Handbook forms part of this agreement and provides greater detail on the above responsibilities.

 

Required skills

 

  • Expertise in wheel throwing and hand-building pottery techniques; glazing and other related topics.
  • A thorough understanding of the risks inherent in working with clay and of how to mitigate those risks.
  • Ability to demonstrate or clearly communicate information, ideas or skills
  • Ability to facilitate engagement by all learners in the activity
  • Ability to plan, organize and manage time
  • Understand learning and how people learn
  • Enjoy interacting with people and show enthusiasm for life-long learning

Reports to

Eltham Community Program Coordinator

Time commitment

As per agreed course / activity schedule.  Confirmation of course dates will occur each term.

Support

  • Organisational induction, and any specialist safety activity training will be provided prior to the start of the course.
  • A review will be performed at the end of a 3 month probation period.
  • Annual reviews will be performed thereafter.
  • All L&LN supervisors provide an open door communication environment for tutors encouraging any questions to be asked and concerns to be raised.
