PURPOSE:

The Nillumbik Gardens for Wildlife program is a collaboration between Nillumbik Shire Council and the community. The program encourages community members to create habitat for local wildlife in their private gardens through habitat gardening. G4W Garden Guides work in pairs to visit local residents and their gardens and offer guidance on habitat gardening and how to increase biodiversity in their own patch.

 

This role will assist the Nillumbik G4W program collaboration to thrive. One of the key ways to achieve this will be visiting community members, providing encouragement and advice on wildlife gardening.

 

 

LOCATION:

Nillumbik Shires Council private residences – various locations.

 

KEY TASKS:

 

  • Visit participants of the Nillumbik G4W program to encourage gardening for wildlife habitat outcomes.
  • Provide a personalised garden visit report to each visited resident to support the garden visit, and provide to the volunteer coordinator.
  • Other roles could include admin support, supporting the newsletter or social media.
  • Provide encouragement to new participants to network with other G4W participants and volunteers in Nillumbik.

 

SUPPORTED BY: Nillumbik Shire Council Environmental Project Officer and Nillumbik G4W committee

 

TIME COMMITMENT: Between 4 – 10 hours per month (negotiated depending on the volunteer). 

 

 

HELPFUL SKILLS:

  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously, in pairs and as part of a wider team.
  • Ability to use, or capacity to learn, google applications (google forms, google docs, google sheets).

 

SUPPORT:

  • Initial training is provided by the Volunteer Coordinator for the Gardens for Wildlife program.
  • The Volunteer Coordinator will provide ongoing support, and ongoing learning and upskilling opportunities throughout the volunteer’s involvement in the program.
  • Support will also be provided by existing volunteers in the Nillumbik Gardens for Wildlife and Gardens for Wildlife Victoria network.
  • We want to create a safe, inclusive and flexible volunteer environment. You can talk to the Volunteer Coordinator about any specific support you require.

 

SECURITY/MEDICAL CHECKS AND LICENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Reference check (minimum of two referees required)
  • Working with Children Check
  • Child Safe training
