Role Overview: The Language Companion Volunteer role at North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust is a vital position that aims to provide companionship and support to patients who have limited or no English language skills. As a Language Companion Volunteer, you will offer your spoken language skills to engage in friendly conversations and alleviate feelings of loneliness or isolation experienced by these patients during their hospital admission.

Duties Include:

  1. Companionship: Engage in friendly conversations with patients who have language barriers, providing them with emotional support and companionship during their hospital stay.
  2. Patient Visits: On an ad hoc basis, respond to requests for companionship visits by hospital staff. Patients who have expressed a desire for company will be matched with volunteers based on their available spoken languages.
  3. Scheduling: Coordinate with the volunteer services team to schedule visits at times that suit both the volunteer and the patient, ensuring that the interaction is convenient and mutually beneficial.
  4. Cultural Sensitivity: Be mindful of and respect the cultural differences of the patients, ensuring that interactions are sensitive, inclusive, and culturally appropriate.
  5. Confidentiality: Respect patient confidentiality and adhere to data protection guidelines.
  6. Feedback: Provide feedback to the volunteer services team regarding patient experiences, concerns, or any additional support needed, helping to improve the overall patient experience.

Please Note: The Language Companion Volunteer role is not an interpreter service, and volunteers should refrain from providing medical advice or acting as official interpreters for patients. The primary focus is to offer companionship and emotional support.
