Guildford Walking for Health

Volunteer walk leaders, Guildford health walks

Leading health walks is a fun way of giving something back to your local community. You make new friends and discover lovely outdoor places.

The health walks are aimed at people recovering from illness, or people wanting to get a bit more active.

Macmillan and the Ramblers run Walking for Health, a national concern. Guildford Walking for Health need volunteer walk leaders and back-markers to lead and back-mark half–hour, and 1-hour long walks during the week, aimed at people recovering from illness, or people wanting to get a bit more active.

Volunteers work in pairs, a walk leader, and at the back the back-marker. No local knowledge or map reading skills required.

Your role will be to support people to help them lead a more active life-style.It will help if you are outgoing and cheerful, and over age 18. Selection is face to face.

Volunteers have to make their own transport arrangements to the starting point of the walk group they wish to be part of. Walks are from: Boxgrove Park shops; the Rokers Golf Club Café in Fairlands; or at the Fountain Centre attached to the St Luke’s Cancer Centre at the Royal Surrey Hospital; or the Jolly Farmer at Whitmoor Common.

STOP PRESS (Jan 2019): We are planning to start new walk groups in April 2019, based in Shere and Worplesden, so are particularly interested in hearing from anyone interested in leading new walks from there.

Aug 2020: We are hoping to start walks for people with disabilities, in wheelchairs or using disability scooters, and we need another 10 volunteers to help with this.

Full training and support provided. If you are interested, please complete the on-line application form.

Mission Statement

The Walking for Health national programme is run by the Ramblers and their goal is that everyone will have access to a short, free and friendly health walk within easy reach of where they live, to help them become and stay active, and we couldn't do this without all the amazing volunteers that make our health walks possible.

From volunteer walk leaders and assistants, volunteers do a fantastic job in supporting and developing the Walking for Health initiative. I'd love for you to be a part of that too!

Guildford Walking for Health currently has five walk groups in Guildford. The groups are: Boxgrove, Mondays from Boxgrove Park shops; Worplesdon, Tuesdays from Worplesdon Place; Shalford, Wednesdays from the Seahorse Inn Shalford; Shere, Thursdays from the Shere Recreation car park; Whitmoor, Fridays from the Jolly Farmer car-park, Whitmoor Common.
