Event Marshal at Brooklands Museum -posted 09.01.2020
Brooklands Museum’s mission is ‘to preserve and interpret the heritage of Brooklands, to use that heritage to inspire and educate and to provide a world-class visitor attraction accessible to all.’ The birthplace of British motor sport and aviation, and home of Concorde, Brooklands comprises an unparalleled collection of Vickers and Hawker aircraft, and Brooklands racing cars and motorcycles all displayed in and around the historic buildings on the site where many were originally built or maintained. Brooklands is unique and opens every day with the support of an award-winning team of volunteers.
Event marshalling at Brooklands Museum is for anyone who has an interest in motoring or motorsport, whether it be on 4 or 2 wheels. It gives people a chance to get really close to the action and to become a part of the large marshals’ team. The good news is that you don’t need any special skills, qualifications or training, just a willingness to learn and to be involved.
Age or gender are no barriers to being a marshal. We encourage anyone to come along and join in. We only ask that you are reasonably fit, comfortable with early starts and don’t mind being out in all weathers while performing your duties. As this is a “public facing” role, the ability to interact with the public and to answer any questions they may have would also be useful. You can commit to as many or as few events as you like, but with around 34 events here at the Museum to choose from, we are sure you will be able to find something of interest.
Jobs will be many and varied, but normally start with helping arriving drivers park up their cars in the right place as they enter the site at the start of the event, then moving on to be trackside during Cavalcades or Demonstrations on the Mercedes-Benz World circuit to help keep the drivers and passengers safe as they proceed around the track. There could then be the ascents of our famous Test Hill to help with, keeping the spectators safe, as well as the drivers and passengers.
The great news is that if you enjoy being a marshal, there is a lot of scope to develop further and to go and help at many other motorsport events. Some of our more experienced team members can be found working at the Goodwood Members’ Meeting, Festival of Speed and the Revival, as well as the British Grand Prix and British Touring Car Championship rounds, and helping marshal at Sprints, Hillclimbs and Rallies.
