zQuick Response Memorial Woodland (Woking) INACTIVE 14/6/23

Volunteer Opportunity - QRMW Part-time Gardener

The Charity

The Quick Response Memorial Woodland (QRMW) is a small, Surrey-based charity run by a dedicated team of volunteers with the aim of assisting ex-servicemen who are in need of immediate assistance - they may be homeless, destitute; and unable to pay a bill that will keep him in his home, feed his family or assist with other essential expenses at a time when they are desperate.  Thereafter, QRMW helps them get in touch with larger charities such as SAFFA to obtain long-term help they require.

The Charity also provides a unique facility of having the Memorial Woodland as a place of reflection and remembrance for the families/friends of former service personnel.  Located at Holmbury St Mary near Dorking in Surrey, it was purchased by the Founder and Chair, Paul ‘the Hat’ Cooling, from his own funds but created by many ex-servicemen who volunteered their time to make the woodland a place of reflection that it is today.   It is their way of showing support for our troops, sharing the sense of loss, helping those suffering from the trauma to gain solace from the tranquillity of the place.

As words about QRMW’s charitable work spread, requests for assistance and visits to the woodland have since increased.  For those who would like to volunteer, the QRMW now needs extra hands to help run its various activities.

The Role

QRMW would like to invite volunteers to give a few hours a week of their time to help the Charity Chairman and Trustees with the day-to-day maintenance of the charity’s woodland.  Some of the duties include:

  • Weeding
  • Planting
  • Pruning and
  • General garden maintenance

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for volunteers with interest in gardening and love the challenge of working outdoors.

The role is suitable for hardworking, enthusiastic individuals with keen interest in garden maintenance to support the long term aspirations of the charity in helping ex-servicemen in need.

The successful volunteers will have the chance to work with nature and gain significant experience in practical woodland management.  By maintaining a tranquil place for ex-forces, their families and friends to meet, sit, remember, reflect and talk; they can make a real difference to those who lost their loved ones.

Hours and Location

We require around 2-4 hours of volunteering work per week to help maintain the charity’s woodland located at Holmbury St Mary Nr Dorking (RH5 6LG).

Suitable hours and days can be discussed and agreed with the Charity Chairman. Due to the location of the Woodland, having personal transport or access to vehicle is desirable.  For those living locally, lifts can be arranged from Westfield Woking to the Woodland.

Mission Statement

We are a registered charity created by a dedicated team of volunteers whose main purpose is to support and raise funds to assist ex-service personnel immediately when they find themselves in times of difficulty.  This is done by holding various events and the generous donations and goodwill of supporters. We run a memorial woodland which is lovingly tended to by our Founder and Chair, Paul ‘The Hat’ Cooling, and a team of volunteers. It is used by ex-soldiers, sailors and airmen and their families as a place of reflection and by local community groups and organisations like the cubs, scouts and schoolchildren to get closer to nature.
