Where is it you want me to volunteer?
We are looking for volunteers to support people living with dementia throughout Surrey. However we will match you with a person with dementia in your area and have clients waiting to be matched.
The impact you'll make...
You will be part of the Alzheimer’s Society service in Surrey called Side by Side. You will offer social contact to a person living with dementia helping them live a fuller and happier life.
Side by Side volunteers will provide agreed support to people with dementia. The aim of the service is to try and support the person living with dementia to carry on being part of their local community by enabling them to stay active, taking part in appropriate social and recreational activities. This could include a trip to the cinema, museum, a game of golf or a local church or community group. Side by Side is about helping the person with dementia to carry on enjoying the activities they have always done and to have the confidence to try new things. This service helps to reduce isolation and enables people with dementia to remain active.
The role will suit you if you are.........
You will need to be patient and reliable. You do not necessarily need any prior knowledge of dementia, though you do need to be committed to learning more about dementia and to have a drive to help someone with dementia to lead a better quality of life. There will be ongoing support in your volunteering role from the Side by Side co-ordinator. Please note this role does require a DBS check and two written references
In order to promote stability for the person with dementia, you need to be able to commit to two hours per week for a minimum of 6 months, after the relevant checks, and training, have taken place. Agreed out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed including travel expenses and planned activities, in accordance with Society policy.
How will I be supported during my volunteering?
Volunteers are invaluable to our services and at the Alzheimer's Society we are committed to supporting volunteers in their role(s). You will be invited to an induction day either at our New Haw or Horsham offices. Some of the topics covered on the day include Dementia awareness, safeguarding, professional boundaries, lone working and confidentiality. Volunteers also have full access to our on line learning system as well as in-house training opportunities as appropriate.
