Community Cancer Support Volunteer - updated 18.02.2021
Here are a few words about our service:
When a life-threatening condition such as cancer or Motor Neurone Disease is diagnosed it can be a lonely, worrying time. The Brigitte Trust offers a free volunteer service of emotional support and practical help. Before first lockdown, and historically, our service was home-based. We are hoping with the easing of restrictions and the rollout of vaccinations that this service will return and currently our telephone support service is proving vital, with over 400 referrals received to date.
Volunteers are currently asked to call the same person or family each time, so a relationship is built up. Emotional support for carers is so important. Having a regular call from a Brigitte Trust volunteer can make a real difference and the Trust also offers bereavement support if requested after a client has died.
Training is provided on Zoom for two sessions twice a month, as well as monthly peer support groups and a programme of speakers and workshops. When home visits become safe an extended training course for our phone volunteers will be provided. Many of our volunteers feel they receive more than they give by listening and supporting people at such a difficult time.
There is no need for a medical background. All we ask of our volunteers is that they are willing to develop their listening skills, and have personal qualities of warmth, empathy and sensitivity. Shopping, outings, hospital appointments and other transport is offered so a car will be needed in due course. We aim to place volunteers promptly with clients in their local area, and travel expenses are reimbursed.
Application is by informal interview, references and a disclosure and barring (DBS) check.
Our online courses run twice each month. Please take a look at our website for more information - we look forward to hearing from you - and click on the "Fill in Application Form" button to apply.

The Brigitte Trust is a Queen's Award registered charity offering a free service of emotional support and practical help. The service is normally offered face-to-face in the home supporting people and their carers when a life-threatening illness such as Cancer or Motor Neurone Disease has been diagnosed. Currently, and since first lockdown, our volunteers are offering telephone support, though in time we hope to return to the home visiting for which we are widely known. The Brigitte Trust is a trusted partner of Surrey County Council and over 400 referrals have been received from Community Responders throughout Surrey. More volunteers are needed now to support people who have received a late diagnosis or delayed treatment.
