When a life-limiting condition such as cancer or Motor Neurone Disease or organ failure is diagnosed it can be a lonely, worrying time. The Brigitte Trust offers a free volunteer service of emotional, practical and social support.
Each week a volunteer will visit a client for up to three hours. The role is a varied, it could be sitting and listening to a person's worries and fears, helping them sort papers, photos and make plans, going out shopping, accompanying someone to a medical appointment, changing the bed, refilling bird feeders, going for coffee and cake or a walk in the park. We provide a comprehensive training programme comprised of six half days and a weekend.
There is no need for a medical background. All the Trust asks of its volunteers is that they are willing to develop their listening skills, and have personal qualities of warmth, empathy and sensitivity.
The Brigitte Trust aims to place volunteers promptly with clients in their local area, and travel expenses are reimbursed.
Application is by informal interview, references and a disclosure and barring (DBS) check.

Mission Statement
The Brigitte Trust is a Queen's Award registered charity offering a free service of emotional support and practical help. The service is offered face-to-face in the home supporting people and their carers when a life-threatening illness such as Cancer or Motor Neurone Disease has been diagnosed.The Brigitte Trust is a trusted partner of Surrey County Council and over 400 referrals are received every year throughout Surrey. More volunteers are needed now to support people who have received a life-limiting diagnosis.
