Community Cancer Support Volunteer
Here are a few words about our service:
When a life-threatening condition such as cancer or Motor Neurone Disease is diagnosed it can be a lonely, worrying time. The Brigitte Trust offers a free volunteer service of emotional support and practical help at home.
Volunteers are asked to offer 3 hours each week and visit the same person or family each time, so a relationship is built up. Emotional support and respite for carers is vital at this most difficult time for both the ill person and their family. Having a regular visit from a Brigitte Trust volunteer can make a real difference. The Trust also offers up to six months of bereavement support if requested.
The Brigitte Trust provides full training and ongoing support at bi-monthly peer support meetings. Many of our volunteers feel they receive more than they give in visiting people at this critical time. Please join us now.
No personal or nursing care is provided and there is no need for a medical background. All we ask of our volunteers is that they are willing to develop their listening skills, and have personal qualities of warmth, empathy and sensitivity. Shopping, outings, hospital appointments and other transport is offered so a car is needed. Travel expenses are reimbursed.
Application is by informal interview, references and a disclosure and barring (DBS) check.
Regular free training courses take place throughout the year, with taster sessions prior to each course so you can find out if volunteering for us is right for you, and we ask for a minimum volunteer commitment to the Trust of two years once training is complete. Please take a look at our website for more information - we look forward to hearing from you - and click on the "Fill in Application Form" button to apply.
