Volunteer Support Worker
Outline works towards being an equal opportunities organisation and has its own Equal Opportunities Policy. It will aim to serve the entire community irrespective of sex, race, age, nationality, physical ability, religious belief or social class. We have noticed how many of those seeking help, advice or support tend to e mail us rather than speak to us directly over the telephone much more these days. A lot of good information is available easily and readily on the internet. The nature of our work has changed and we are adapting to meet this different approach. However at the end of the day when the chips are down and we really are desperate it’s so much more comforting to hear another human voice and be able to talk to a real person. That’s why we exist.
Outline needs committed dedicated individuals willing to offer their time to help us provide confidential support and guidance to LGBT people over the telephone or by e-mail. We ask our volunteers to give at least five hours per month (usually two helpline shifts) and take part in our training programme as required. Shifts are available on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday evenings.
No experience necessary as full training is provided (sexuality, coming out, sexual health, relationships, listening and basic counselling skills). Volunteers must identify as lesbian / gay / bisexual or transgender
Interpersonal skills required: listening skills, awareness of LGB issues and email ability.
