My Guide - Sighted guiding volunteer
Are you looking to help directly improve someone’s quality of life?
We are looking for a kind hearted, friendly person in the Haslemere area who is interested in helping out a blind or partially sighted person by providing sighted guiding on a weekly basis to allow them to improve their mobility.
My Guide volunteers build a partnership with a person who is blind or partially sighted, helping that person get out and about and achieve personal mobility goals such as resuming a hobby or improving their fitness. We provide advice and support from both staff members and fellow volunteers throughout each partnership, so you'll always have someone on hand to help you.
Each partnership is unique, meaning the days or times you will volunteer are not currently set but decided between the volunteer and service user. Most My Guides give about two hours of their time each week. It is also difficult to say how long a partnership will last, but the average is between 3-6 months.
To become a My Guide volunteer you will need to:
* Register as a Guide Dogs volunteer
* Obtain a DBS check (can take up to 8 weeks to obtain)
* Undertake safeguarding training - which will take 1 full day (usually 10am - 4pm at the Reading Mobility Team)
* Complete sighted guiding training - so you can guide safely and with confidence. This training will take 1 full day overall (usually takes place at the Reading Mobility Team)
The training is organised and delivered by Guide Dogs and as a registered volunteer you are free to claim for travel expenses to attend the training required for this role.
Once you have completed your training you will be matched with a person who is blind or partially sighted. This match will be determined by the person's needs, compatibility and location to you.
We will not rest until people who are blind and partially sighted can enjoy the same freedom of movement as everyone else.
We will deliver a world class guide dog service as part of a range of mobility services, and work to break down barriers to ensure people who are blind and partially sighted can get out and about on their own terms.
