Sight for Surrey

Children's Recreation Programme - Driver & Support

Volunteer to support our Children’s Recreation Programme.

  • Collecting parents and children who wish to attend our events but do not have transport.
  • Supporting families during the activities.  Some of the parents are visually impaired themselves and require practical support and information.   Other families are struggling with the emotional impact of having a child with a disability and would benefit from having a person in a befriending role, who will offer that additional support of collecting them and being alongside them as they meet others.

You would be a key part of the Sight for Surrey team and be accountable to the Children’s Recreational Coordinator.

We are looking for people who are able to give clear verbal and meaningful descriptions and sighted guide assistance as appropriate.

You would be required to hold a clean driving licence and have car insurance that recognises that you will be carrying passengers as part of your volunteering role.

Our volunteers are an essential part of our organisation, enabling us to provide a wide breadth of services to our service users. Working with a visually impaired young person and their family offers a rewarding opportunity to enable them to enjoy activities and pursuits that, without such support, they would be excluded from. You will make a vital difference to the families as well; parents regularly inform us how they benefit from meeting other parents in similar situations and by sharing experiences and information.

Sight for Surrey is committed to developing and supporting our volunteers; our Volunteer Recruitment Coordinator will keep in regular contact with you and we will ensure you have Visual Impairment awareness training, including Sighted Guide Techniques and some basic training around Safe Guarding as appropriate.

Sight for Surrey will pay 40 pence a mile for the journeys you undertake on behalf of the organisation.

The Children’s Recreation Coordinator will prepare a risk assessment with you to ensure that you have the support and contact details you need in the event of an emergency.
