Age UK Surrey

Making Connections - Guildford, Waverley and NE Hants

What will I be doing?
Befriending and supporting an older person to make a positive change to their life.

How this will be achieved?
By enabling an older person to engage in activities outside their home. You would support and motivate them to take up a new interest or hobby that they have identified as being important to them. This support may include building their confidence by accompanying them to the cinema, going out for a coffee, going for a walk or joining a local group.

Where this will take place?
You will be introduced to the older person in their own home. Then depending on their identified goals, either visit them regularly at home, or as appropriate, accompany them on public transport or in your own car to a local social group or event.

How this will make a difference?
Through providing this support you will enable the older person to reconnect to their local community, thus improving their sense of wellbeing.

What are the skills needed to support an older person to achieve their goal?
To volunteer for this kind of role you will need to:

  • enjoy the company of older people and be interested in what they have to say.
  • have empathy and some understanding of the kind of issues they face in regards to living with long term health conditions and dementia (training will be offered).
  • value and respect the beliefs of older people.
  • A car owner/driver is desirable but not essential.
