Befriending Volunteers - Guildford and Waverley

A Befriending Volunteer provides long or short term support to anyone over 50 who is lonely and isolated. Volunteers work with people to achieve their individual goals, improve their health and wellbeing and support them to make positive changes to their lives.

Hours: Ideally 2 hours per week

Location: Volunteers are needed in Guildford and Waverley in the following areas:

  • GU1 (Merrow/Guildford)
  • GU3 (Compton)
  • GU5 (Bramley/Wonersh/Shalford)
  • GU6 (Alfold/Dunsfold/Cranleigh)
  • GU7 (Farncombe);
  • GU8 (Godalming/Milford/Witley/Elstead)
  • GU10 (Frensham; Tongham; Farnham)
  • GU12 (Normandy) GU27 (Hindhead/Ewhurst/Haslemere)

The types of support befriending volunteers offer includes:

 Face to face long term support – supporting and motivating people who may require one to one ongoing support, to engage in their local community. This may include going to the cinema, out for a coffee, go for a walk, and join a local group or visiting someone at home for company and conversation, reading the paper, playing a game or using a computer.

 Short-term mentoring support to rebuild confidence after a period in hospital, period of ill health or have moved into a new area.

 Helping to facilitate Café Culture and other social groups.

 Telephone support.

Activities vary according to each individual and between long and term support. You will be linked to a Coordinator for regular updates and will be required to provide a brief record of visits and times. You will be provided with information on our policies and procedures especially regarding Health and Safety, Confidentially and Safeguarding.

Personal Qualities: 

We are looking for volunteers who;

 have good communication skills

 are reliable and can make a commitment

 have empathy and patience

 are flexible

 have the ability to encourage and motivate people

 can be a facilitator, not a fixer.

Induction training is essential prior to supporting an individual. The role requires a DBS check and two references.  Age UK Surrey will reimburse expenses such as travel costs and telephone.
