The Cheryl King Trust

The trust helps fund

• music lessons for financially disadvantaged local young people and
• inspirational performances to encourage local children to take up instruments

 No one should be prevented from taking music lessons because their parents can’t afford it, or their school doesn’t inspire them musically. 

The trust was set up in memory of Cheryl King, a very gifted and popular music teacher. She tragically passed away just before Christmas 2014.  Cheryl was committed to providing opportunities for all children to learn about music regardless of their background. 

The Trust is a registered charity.  We are a registered charity staffed by volunteers. With no overheads, 100% of what we raise goes to help and inspire local young people to make music.

Give a Gig

One of the main ways in which the trust raises money is through support from local professional and amateur choirs, orchestras, bands, ensembles and music venues.  There are many different ways in which music organisations can support us including by “giving gigs” and becoming a CKT supporter and raising awareness of what we do with their members, audience and social media followers.

“Give a gig” can take many different forms including:

• Donating profits from performances
• Holding bucket collections at the end of events
• Organising raffles or auction
• Having an optional donation to CKT when people buy tickets

Role Description

With your help, we could inspire many more children to make music in the future.

The fund - raising manager will have primary responsibility for approaching and liaising with professional and amateur choirs, orchestras, bands, ensembles and music venues to help us raise funds.

The role will include:

• Implementing CKTs agreed strategy and processes to raise funds primarily through give a gig 
• Approaching organisations to request that they give a gig and become CKT supporters
• Liaising with them to ensure that gigs are successful from the perspective of both the organisation and CKT including implementing CKT’s checklist for this
• Attending gigs as CKT’s representative
• Following up with organisations after performances
• Maintaining a spreadsheet recording details of organisations and gigs
• Managing and developing a long-term relationship between CKT and the organisation

The exact content of the role can be adapted and widened or narrowed depending on the strengths and interests of individual candidates.

The role will initially focus on give a gig in line with the charity fund raising strategy but may change over time in line with the strategy. 

Level of Commitment and Terms 

The time commitment is flexible. The minimum requirement is probably an average of half a day a week. A day a week would be ideal. The role is very flexible in terms of when time is spent from week to week.

The role is voluntary and unpaid.  

We would also be happy to discuss whether the appointee would either initially or over time take on a position as trustee and board director. 

Candidate Specification

Candidate must have good:  

• organisation and administrative skills
• written and verbal communication skills
•  IT skills including familiarity with email, word and  excel
• Attention to detail

and a passion for music and/or music education 

Previous charity, fund raising, marketing and social media experience would be very helpful but is not essential

CKT believes no young person should be precluded from taking music lessons because either their parents cannot afford them or they are not inspired to take up lessons.  

We help fund music lessons for financially disadvantaged children and young people in Surrey whatever their level of musical development and tries to level the music playing field by funding inspirational performances to encourage children to take up instruments in schools where historically take up has been low.
