GASP Motor Project
GASP is a Surrey based charity providing hands-on courses in basic motor mechanics and practical engineering for young people. Operating from our purpose-built motor vehicle workshop, GASP sessions are delivered to 13 - 19 year olds who have an interest in vehicles or engineering. Our courses enable them to develop practical skills and knowledge about motor engineering, as well as developing key personal attributes such as team working and problem solving.
Our sessions run in the evening (Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday: 7-9pm) and during the day (everyday 10-2pm). Evening sessions are run on an informal, but safe basis, with the emphasis on fun and enjoyment. Our daytime sessions are more structured with clear objectives and outcomes.
The Role:
We are looking for volunteers to support our evening sessions. Working with the session lead, you will be with, and directly supporting, individuals or small groups of young people, delivering basic mechanics/engineering workshops.
Main responsibilities are to:
- Provide support for either individual, or small groups (maximum 3 people) of, young people.
- Work with the young people teaching hands-on skills, using the correct tools in a safe manner.
- Supervise and advise the young people on their projects.
- Be a safe and positive role model for the young people.
- Ensure that Health & Safety procedures are complied with and ensure students wear the correct PPE.
- Follow GASP policies & procedures and work to the vision, values and standards of the charity
Skills / Experience
A knowledge of motor mechanics or engineering, coupled with the ability to pass on practical skills at an appropriate level for young people, is essential.
- An aptitude and enthusiasm for working with young people.
- A patient and calm nature, whilst being well organised.
- Flexibility and an ability to work under own initiative when required.
- Understanding of Health & Safety requirements appropriate to a workshop environment.
- Ability to work as part of a small, close knit team, committed to regular weekly attendance.
- First Aid Training is desirable.
Additional Information
Some activities take place at the weekend (about 6 times a year) and availability to support the young people is desirable.
The workshop is not accessible using public transport.
Please note that all GASP Motor Project volunteers are required to provide references. All volunteers are subject to an Enhanced DBS Check.

We deliver accredited courses in basic motor mechanics and practical engineering skills and contribute to students’ positive personal development. We do this by providing specialist, practical, hands-on learning within a focused, personalised and disciplined framework. This is either at our fully equipped custom-built workshop in Albury (near Guildford) or through our mobile unit, which enables us to bring the courses out to schools and
youth organisations across Surrey.
