Support coaches

Volunteer opportunity - Support Coaches

Background

Mediation Surrey holds a contract with the Office and Police and Crime Commissioner to provide a

coaching support service to victims of Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) and those experiencing difficulties with their neighbours. This coaching service started in 2017, and we have expanded our number of coaches to cover the increased demand on our service.

Each suitable client will usually require between one and three coaching sessions of about an hour.

These sessions can be offered at intervals suitable for you and them.

We have two professional coaches who coach the most vulnerable clients. These clients often have pre-existing mental health problems.

The service is aimed primarily at vulnerable victims. Vulnerable is defined as:

• People who have suffered from a history of ASB which is impacting on their health,

lifestyle, personal safety or quality of life.

• People who feel vulnerable /unsafe in their own home as a consequence of

ASB/issues with neighbours

• People who have a disability, learning difficulties or are suffering from a long-term

illness or mental health issues, and there is an indication that ASB will re-occur.

• People who have been targeted for any reason which could include faith,

nationality, ethnicity, sexuality, gender or disability and there is an indication that this

will re-occur

Training and support

Our volunteer coaches will be trained by John Gray, from the Academy of Executive Coaching

www.aoec.com The course has been specially adapted to the needs of our client group.

Training dates will be via Zoom and spread over a period of a few months. Usually at weekends.

Dates have yet to be confirmed. Between the first two days and the follow-up days, trainees will be asked to practice their coaching skills on friends and family. There will also be some telephone and/or online discussions and tutorials facilitated by John Gray.

As coaching is essentially a one-to-one process our experienced coaches are working alone with clients with a careful risk assessment process in place.

Criteria

We are looking for volunteers who wish to develop coaching skills who:

• Have experience of working with vulnerable adults or other experience of working

with people in stressful situations

• Can recognise and work with surface and underlying strong emotions

• Can create options for managing the situation while encouraging ownership

of the situation

• Can commit to between a minimum of 6 cases over the year. This is to ensure the

Support Coaching project can meet demand and to build individual confidence in

coaching skills.

• Are willing to undertake on-going development and supervision
