Summer Reading Challenge Volunteer

This volunteering opportunity is part of our commitment to involving young people in library services, and is aimed at young volunteers aged 14 – 25 years.

The 2019 Summer Reading Challenge runs from July until September in all Surrey libraries.

It is a fun challenge for children aged 4 – 11 which aims to keep them reading throughout the school summer holiday. Children who sign up to the challenge receive small rewards and incentives as they read their way through the summer, and those that complete their challenge by reading six books are awarded a special medal and certificate.

Children can read any books they like – fiction, non-fiction, poetry – the focus is very much on the enjoyment of reading.

Last year, more than 17,000 Surrey children took part. It is a busy time for libraries, and staff very much appreciate the help provided by volunteers.

As a volunteer, you will be:

  • Enrolling children onto the Challenge
  • Giving them their rewards and incentives
  • Talking to them about the books they have read
  • Helping with summer holiday events and activities

We need you to be enthusiastic, reliable and friendly, and to enjoy working with children.

Hours are flexible, but we ask you to commit to at least 10 hours over the summer.

You will be supported by library staff and training will be provided at the library.
