The Surrey Arts Wardrobe is a Theatrical Costume hire department run by Surrey County Council.

Originally the collection housed items for various schools, groups and the Surrey Youth Theatre. The initial idea for the collection was that those housing costumes could hire their own items back for free and anything else at a reduced rate with the running costs of the service being met with income made by hiring items out to the general public. In recent years it became clear that this was not sustainable and now the whole collection belongs to Surrey County Council and grows by public donation.

The collection remains a vital resource for schools, amateur dramatics groups, youth theatres and events across Surrey and beyond as well as being used by private individuals and small scale professional productions. Volunteers are an important and valued part of the Wardrobe service and are integral to maintaining and developing the Wardrobe collection and service.

Duties: This role involves completing tasks necessary for the smooth running of the wardrobe alongside wardrobe staff. Tasks could include; washing, ironing, steaming, and returning costume items to the rails, assisting with customers, undertaking minor repairs and alterations.

Skills and Experience Needed: We require a friendly, organised, practical person or persons with common sense and an interest in costume or fashion to join our friendly team and assist us with the day to day wardrobe tasks.

The ideal candidates would have some or all of the following skills: hand and machine sewing skills, laundry and ironing, good customer service, excellent attention to detail and the ability to learn about the collection.

The right person or persons would be willing and able to commit to volunteering with us at the Surrey Arts Wardrobe for a minimum of ½ a day once a week on a long-term basis. You would be expected to complete tasks independently but Wardrobe staff would be on hand to offer support and guidance if required.

Commitment required: Min ½ day - max 4 days per week

Training: You will receive a full induction and if appropriate an introduction to the IT systems on site. Further training will be available as required depending on the demands of the role.
