Action Tutoring

English and maths school tutors

We are looking for volunteers available to tutor during the academic year for an hour a week for ten weeks. We support disadvantaged pupils to achieve.

Once you have been accepted and trained you will be able to select a school opportunity that fits best with your location and schedule.

You can volunteer to tutor in either English or maths at GCSE or primary level. You will tutor one or two pupils, and you will have the same students each week. The pupils you tutor are normally on the C/D borderline, and the aim is to help those pupils achieve 5 A*-C GCSEs including English and maths. We provide the resources which will help you to tutor, including past papers, sample answers and tips on tutoring.

We generally require our tutors to either be educated to degree level, or to be studying for a degree, and to have a B grade (or above) at A Level (or equivalent) in the subject they wish to tutor.  English or maths-related A Level subjects are also considered, such as: history, politics or sociology (for English tutors) and physics, chemistry and economics (for maths tutors).

. Experience working with young people is helpful but not essential. We do require an excellent level of written and spoken English.

We cover travel expenses up to £5 per session.

We recruit on a rolling basis throughout the year.
