Sight for Surrey

Child Chaperone

Volunteer to support Sight for Surrey's Children’s Recreation Programme.

  • Collecting Children /Young People who wish to attend our events but do not have a Parent or Guardian to bring them to the events. The recreation programme runs events at weekends and during school holidays.  The amount of time required for each event is generally few hours twice a month.
  • Supporting Child /Young Person during the activities.  The Child /Young Person may require practical support and information.

As a volunteer you would be a key member of the Sight for Surrey team and be accountable to the Children’s Recreational Coordinator.

We are looking for people who are able to give clear and meaningful verbal descriptions and sighted guide assistance to the child/young person as appropriate.

You would be required to hold a clean driving licence and have car insurance that recognises that you will be carrying passengers as part of your volunteering role.

Our volunteers are an essential part of our organisation, enabling us to provide a wide breadth of services to our service users. Working with a visually impaired young person offers a rewarding opportunity to enable them to enjoy activities and pursuits that, without such support, they would be excluded from.

Sight for Surrey is committed to developing and supporting our volunteers; our volunteer coordinator will keep in regular contact with you. We will ensure you have Visual Impairment awareness training, including Sighted Guide Techniques and some basic training around Safe Guarding Children as appropriate.

Parents will be responsible for providing appropriate car seats for their children.

Sight for Surrey will pay 40 pence a mile for the journeys you undertake on behalf of the organisation.

The Children’s Recreation Coordinator will prepare a risk assessment with you to ensure that you have the support and contact details you need in the event of an emergency.
