Listening Volunteer
Are you a good listener?
Do you have empathy and do you care about others?
Have you considered becoming a listening volunteer?
Guildford Samaritans are looking to expand and diversify their team.
Commitment: 3 hour weekly shift, to suit your schedule and one night shift per month (alternating between11pm-2am and 2am-5am). Shifts take place at the Guildford branch.
Who volunteers for the Samaritans?
There are around 22,000 Samaritans in more than 200 branches across the UK and ROI.
Samaritans are ordinary people from all backgrounds and walks of life.
Samaritans need to be emotionally resilient: tough life experiences can leave people vulnerable, so they need to come to terms with their own life events before they can take on the troubles of others.
Samaritans support each other: because their work is strictly confidential, Samaritans cannot share details with anyone who is not a Samaritans volunteer. Instead they use the support structure within Samaritans to be there for each other.
What do they do?
Every ten seconds, the Samaritans answer a call for help.
They are available 24/7, 365 days a year for anyone who’s struggling to cope, who needs someone to listen without judgement or pressure.
Samaritans support people via phone and on online chat.
Samaritans also reach out to people in their local communities, in prisons, hospitals, schools and on the rail network.
