Transport can be a major concern for the elderly, vulnerable or infirm. Public transport is often not available, inaccessible or infrequent, whilst taxis are expensive. Care for Guildford provides free transport for such clients where it is essential for their well being, such as medical appointments.
We provide our services during normal working hours Monday to Friday and we are looking for volunteer telephone appointment organisers. We call them Duty Officers and they are key to what we do.
Duty Officers work about one day a month from their own home matching volunteer drivers to client requests. The Care contact number is routed to your home phone so incoming and outgoing calls are logged against it and there are no costs to you. The appointment recording system uses a laptop and bespoke software. Each DO on completion of their day’s duty passes the laptop to the next DO on the rota.
Volunteer Duty Officers
- Need a confident telephone manner
- Are comfortable talking and listening to the elderly and vulnerable
- Are comfortable using a computer
- Will need two referees and to complete a DBS application
- Ideally need a car to deliver the laptop to the next DO
Full training and support is given on the appointments system, its operation and DO’s duties and you will not be expected to carry out a duty on your own until you are quite comfortable with the procedures.

Care for Guildford - What We Do
We are a good neighbour scheme, a network of volunteers providing practical help to improve the quality of life for elderly, vulnerable or infirm residents of Guildford.
The type and demand for services has changed over the years and today we maintain some 150 volunteers helping Guildford residents in need.
These days, transport to GP surgeries, clinics, dentists and hospitals are the main tasks we undertake. But we also do shopping on behalf of a client or doing small one off jobs in the home like putting up shelves or changing light bulbs.
We provide a number of services that include:
Primarily we take clients to Medical appointments , Dentists, Clinics, Clubs, Day Centres and Hospital appointments.
We shop on a weekly or fortnightly basis for anyone who is housebound. We can also shop on a temporary basis, for example when someone first comes out of hospital.
We help with small one off jobs around the home such as putting up simple shelves or curtain rails, moving heavy furniture or changing a light bulb for those with limited mobility. We do not undertake housework, plumbing, gardening or electrical repairs.
