Visitor Experience Support

The Visitor Experience Support Volunteer plays an important role in welcoming and assisting guests at the Old Melbourne Gaol. Volunteers help create a positive, engaging, and informative visitor experience by providing friendly greetings, wayfinding, and general information about the site and its history.

Time Commitment: Saturdays, 10:30am–3:30pm

Key Tasks and Responsibilities could be 

Warmly welcome visitors on arrival and create a positive first impression.
Provide general information about the Gaol, its exhibits, visitor flow, and onsite facilities.
Assist visitors with any additional information they require to enhance their visit.
Support Property staff with visitor engagement and crowd flow as needed.
Maintain an approachable, helpful presence throughout the shift.
Follow all site procedures, including safety, emergency, and visitor service guidelines.
Please note : This is not a Tour Guide position but a support role within the venue.


Skills desirable 

Friendly, welcoming, and confident in engaging with the public.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Interest in history, heritage, or cultural tourism (desirable but not essential).
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Reliability and punctuality.


Training & Support

Volunteers receive role-specific induction and orientation.
Ongoing guidance is provided by the Property Support team.
Additional training opportunities may be offered.

As part of the application process, we will ask you to agree to register as a National Trust Volunteer. Volunteers are required to have a current Working with Children’s Card (free for volunteers).
