First Friend - Saint John

The New Friend initiative is primarily to help create a natural, unique friendship with your newcomer match while assisting them in adjusting to life in Canada. This position is co-ordinated by Kendra Gautreau, Volunteer Liaison, K.Gautreau@saintjohny.ca

Major Responsibilities:

  • Attend an orientation and training session for volunteers
  • Set up a meeting schedule or a plan determining when and where you will meet each week
  • Scheduling is flexible and may change over time
  • Introduce the newcomer to the city of Saint John and some of the resources it has to offer through guided tours or visits throughout the city
  • Offer support and guidance in learning to shop for groceries and other common needs
  • Introduce the newcomer to bus routes as a means of transportation throughout the city
  • Offer the newcomer an opportunity to regularly practice his or her English in an informal setting
  • Take time to learn and understand the culture and values of the newcomer while simultaneously teaching an appreciation for Canadian traditions and values
  • Introduce the newcomer to social and recreational activities
  • Update the Community Volunteer Liaison through timely and consistent reports of weekly visits using the framework provided for this purpose
